July 10th in New Zealand

This morning entailed a hike to the Franz Josef Glacier. Without a tour guide (which we didn't have time for), we were not allowed to go past the rope! But we did have to hike the rocky bed to get a close look.

We next headed over Arthur's Pass to the east coast of New Zealand's south island. Our luck held out with good weather. High in the mountains we got to see the Kea, the only true alpine parrot in the world. It has obviously learned what humans have to offer.

The views across the mountains were spectacular. At times it seemed like we were on the set of Dr. Zhivago!
